Five decades ago scientist through an electron microscope unveiled that there is a a blob like structure present inside the cell. This structure, form, moves and then disappear within the cells.
Although the scientist discovered the existence of these blobs nearly half a century ago but still most of the things related to them are unidentified. Later on, scientists came to recognize that this mysterious structure is called “assemblages”. It has a cloud like structure filled with protein, which plays quite a significant role in the lifetime of a cell. It possesses the ability to provide new options in the treatment of cancer and other diseases.
Two researchers Jeffery Toretsky and Peter Wright invited several other researchers from numerous arenas of study in order to examine the function of these blobs in health and disease.
The study, based on this research is printed in The Journal of Cell Biology with an entitle of “Assemblages: Functional units formed by cellular phase separation”.
Toretsky and Wright stated that the this mixture of researchers who belongs to different discipline will provide more awareness of these assemblages and their purpose. This study and manipulation of assemblages will pave the way to the understanding of biological processes. Moreover, the research will determine the influence of assemblages on human health.
Furthermore, they said that the blob like structure are generally composed of fundamentally disordered proteins. These proteins usually search for each other and form into assemblages, and this procedure is known as “Phase separation”.
The study connects the very basic biological phenomena of protein interaction with the ability of new drug discovery.
